Position Description

Deque is seeking a Vice President of Engineering to lead our engineering organization. This position will play a crucial role in developing and scaling our engineering practices, teams, and culture to support Deque's mission of digital equality. You will be responsible for building and maintaining a high-performance engineering organization while establishing processes that achieve the right balance between standardization and agility. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading engineering teams, developing talent, and implementing engineering practices that drive innovation and excellence. We're looking for a strategic leader who is passionate about creating an inclusive engineering culture that empowers teams to build accessible software solutions that make a real difference in people's lives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and scale a world-class engineering organization that attracts, retains, and develops top talent
  • Establish and maintain lightweight, consistent engineering processes that ensure rapid, quality delivery while meeting accessibility, security, and other non-functional requirements
  • Partner with the Chief Architect to drive appropriate standardization, code reuse, and architectural coherence while maintaining team autonomy
  • Create transparent career advancement frameworks and performance management systems that align individual growth with company objectives
  • Lead the implementation of innovative engineering practices, tools, and methodologies, including the strategic adoption of AI tools to enhance productivity
  • Ensure engineering teams receive appropriate training in security, accessibility, and emerging technologies
  • Manage tax credit opportunities and engineering compensation strategy
  • Create effective onboarding processes to integrate new engineering talent quickly and successfully
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Partner with the Chief Product Officer to ensure alignment between product strategy, technical strategy, and engineering execution

Requirements

  • 8+ years of engineering leadership experience with at least 4 years in senior leadership roles
  • Background in SaaS product development
  • Experience scaling engineering organizations and implementing effective engineering practices
  • Strong track record of attracting, developing, and retaining engineering talent
  • A strong drive to organize, incentivize, and manage teams to achieve strategic product priorities that drive competitive advantages for the company
  • A strong track record and drive to be successful with and through the engineering teams
  • Experience implementing performance management systems that drive accountability and engagement
  • Proven ability to balance standardization with team autonomy
  • Experience leading distributed engineering teams
  • Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies and best practices
  • Passion for and experience with implementing and adopting emerging technologies and tools, including AI-assisted development
  • A desire to lead and work with a world class organization
